(It's that point of the semester where I no longer know what week it is.)
In Group Forms this week, we were given "choose our own adventure" assignments.
For my score, I was interested in the unspoken rules of different social settings. This thought came from when we went to Thompson Library a few weeks back for our entrances/exits/transitions scores. We talked about how in Thompson people usually walk on the right side; try to be quiet; and so on. I was wondering how the unspoken rules might differ in a place like the Union Market.
However, I ended up not really paying much attention to the unspoken rules of the Union Market at all! I became very interested in the architecture. There are pillars and islands scattered throughout the Union Market; there are swirly patterns on the floor as well as square patterns on the floor, the ceiling is multi-layered... It's a place that I go so often, yet I never even realized how much was happening architecturally until I put my score-observation goggles on. That is what I ended up pulling on from to make my score.

For my movement bank, I set out to make one continuous phrase. I often create very gestural choreography, and I like to stay within certain parameters of the space. I also often use basic locomotion (i.e., simple walking) to transition from one idea to the next. Therefore, I wanted to make a phrase that traveled through the space and I tried to minimize the amount of catch-steps I used, so that it was the movement material itself that traveled. I was actually pleasantly surprised with some of the things that came out of my body with these restrictions, though I still have things I want to fine-tune.
Meanwhile, in class we've been discussing power dynamics in choreography and on the stage... I'm pretty sure I'm about to fall down that rabbit hole, so more to come on that.
